Islet cell transplant

This site is dedicated to providing information about islet cell research and transplants for type 1 diabetics. I speak from experience because on February 1, 2002, I was the first recipient in the US to receive an islet cell transplant under the expanded worldwide Edmonton Protocol. This was performed at the University of Minnesota under the direction of Dr. Bernhard Hering.

I have shared some of my experiences and thoughts in the Personal Experiences and FAQ sections on this site. I welcome other ecipients that wish to share their story. Submit them to me via e-mail and I will post them.

For a long time, there has been little optimism in alternative treatments for diabetes. This procedure is an extraordinary breakthough and has great potential in improving the quality of life for those with type 1 diabetes. Please join me in helping to support this on-going research by purchasing a t-shirt.

Proceeds from the sale of the t-shirts will go to the Islet Transplant Research Fund at the DIIT. These are high quality 6.1 oz. ultracotton, heavyweight, embroidered t-shirts. For more info, please see the FAQs.

A special thanks to all the staff at the University of Minnesota involved in islet transplant. It has been a privilege to be involved with such a selfless, concerned, committed, and professional group. They have made a dream a reality.
